JANUARYHigher and Higher Rambling Rose

This year's first dog of the month is called Higher and Higher Rambling Rose, but she mostly listens to Zibelle. January is her birth month and this time the miss is turning 12. This twelve-year-old is of the Irish Red Setter breed.

The name reveals that the dog breed originated in Ireland. During the 18th century, the setter became popular on the green island where the dog was trained to become a retrieving bird dog where it would find shot birds and retrieve them to the handler. Towards the end of the 19th century, the setter began to spread outside of Ireland and the first setters came to Sweden in the 1910s. The Irish Setter comes in two different varieties; the Irish Red Setter and the Irish Red and White Setter. The difference between the two is not particularly great, it is mainly about the coat color. In Sweden there are today more than 3,000 red setters compared to just over 100 red and white.

Many people are attracted to the setter's beautiful appearance, but this is also a good hunting dog. The Irish Kennel Club requires that the breed pass field tests, which means that its original characteristics are still rewarded. This is how the SKK describes the breed: "The Irish Red Setter has a lot of energy and a desire to hunt. Typical of the breed is that it is calm and pleasant indoors, but turns into an intense bundle of energy outdoors. If it gets an outlet for its great energy and desire to hunt, its pleasant nature can also make it an affectionate family member."

Zibelle lives in northern Norrland and she says that "I live on a farm in the countryside with a mistress and master. Here also lives my little sister Cayenne, who is also an Irish Red Setter, and the red cat Zimba. There are also two horses on our farm that I enjoy being around."

"When we train rally obedience, I prefer to have soft treats as a reward," says Zibelle and continues, "I also train a little nosework." The twelve-year-old says that she likes to exercise on stools and on different kinds of balance balls/pillows. "My favorite toy is a squeaky fox," says Zibelle, and in the same breath, she continues, "She likes to run around in the forest or go on game trails the best."

"In the evening, I sometimes sit in the hall and bang on the door to the scrub, where there are dog treats and chew bones. Mom and dad are then fooled and think that I need to go outside because I'm sitting there in the hall. But that's not what I want," says Zibelle.
