A long plank fixed at a height and with a non-slip mat on it. That's exactly what this long paw plate is. The target is made in Sweden at LG Apporter and just like other products from the carpentry shop, this paw plate is handmade.
The target itself is made of pine and to give the dog a better grip and more feel, the upper part is covered with a durable rubber mat. The underside has two feet, which means that the plank does not lie on the ground, but a little bit up.
The long paw plate is good to use when you want to train lateral movements for obedience, heelwork to music or freestyle. But letting the dog walk sideways with either just the front legs or just the hind legs on the platform is also useful for strength training. It can also be a way to teach the dog to find its body and become aware of all its paws.
In addition to using the board for lateral movements, you can also let the dog walk balanced along the platform. Perhaps put the paw plate on two stools and let the dog walk from one stool to the other.
Another difficult and useful exercise can be to ask the dog to walk with its front legs sideways on the board while its hind legs walk sideways over different balance balls.
